The Chania region boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Crete. The Balos lagoon fascinates with its turquoise waters bordered by soft pink sand. Further south, Elafonissi enchants visitors with its unspoilt natural beauty and pastel-coloured beaches. As for Falassarna, this magnificent beach, framed by hills, offers an unforgettable spectacle when the sun sets over the sea.
Wild landscapes
The Samaria Gorge, one of the longest in Europe, offers a spectacular 16km route through vertiginous cliffs. Less well known but just as superb, the Agia Irini gorge offers a more peaceful alternative, with a shady path through a deep valley. These wild areas are the perfect playground for hikers.
The historical treasures
Stroll through the flower-filled lanes of Paleochora, where traditional tavernas stand beside the sea. Theriso, nestling in the heart of a lush green gorge, has an enchanting mountain atmosphere. In Vouves, contemplate a thousand-year-old olive tree that has stood the test of time. Admire the Venetian heritage in the historic port of Chania, where the majestic lighthouse watches over the waves. Finally, the archaeological site of Aptera reveals the remains of an ancient city, with fortifications, Roman baths and a stone theatre.
The peninsulas
Near Chania, the Akrotiri and Rodopos peninsulas are two little-known gems of Crete. On Akrotiri, visitors will discover a harmonious blend of secret coves and historic monasteries, all overlooked by breathtaking views of the Mediterranean. The Rodopos peninsula, meanwhile, reveals a more raw nature, with traditional villages and isolated chapels dotting a barren, authentic landscape.
